ESPN’s David Pollack: Women don’t belong on college playoff committee

Oh brother (but not sister), here we go.

I knew the college football selection committee was going to be controversial, but I didn’t think it would happen before the panel was actually announced.

News that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to named to the committee has already elicited blowback from certain blowhards at ESPN.

Former Georgia player David Pollack said on Saturday morning’s GameDay show he didn’t think women belonged on a committee that, starting next year, will choose the top four teams for the new playoff.

“I want people on this committee, guys, that can watch tape, yes, that have played football, that are around football, that can tell you different teams, on tape, not on paper.”

ESPN host Chris Fowler responded: “So no woman belongs on the committee, then?”

Pollack: “You said that...I’ll say it, yeah, yeah.”

It is presumed Pollack believes that women are entitled to vote, just not on football.

Yeah, this panel is going to be a blast.

Wait until Pollack finds out at least one former sportswriter might be on the selection committee. What could they know if they never played the game, right?

The other names leaking out have not been as controversial. USC Athletic Director Pat Haden and Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez are expected to be members, which signals the panel will sort of look like the NCAA basketball selection committee.

The panel, which will be between 12 and 18 members, is also expected to include former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese and Ole Miss great Archie Manning.

“We’re pretty far along and each of the big five conferences is going to have an athletics director on it and there will be a bunch of at-large members,” Pac 12 Commissioner Larry Scott told reporters at Thursday night’s UCLA-Utah game in Salt Lake City.

Scott said the committee will be filled with “great football minds, former coaches, other people of great stature that will bring a lot of integrity and credibility to it.”

It’s obvious Rice falls into the category of “other people of great stature.”

But what does she know about football?

David Pollack wants to know.
