San Jose State ended No. 16 Fresno State’s BCS dreams Friday with a crazy 62-52 win in San Jose. The upset probably set off firewords in DeKalb, where Northern Illinois (12-0) now controls its destiny for a BCS spot.

Northern Illinois moved past Fresno State in last week’s BCS standings, but there was some question as to whether the Huskies could hold off the Bulldogs.

Northern Illinois was 14th in the BCS standings while Fresno was 16th.

There is no more drama now between the Mountain West and Mid-American conferences.

The champion of a non-automatic qualifying conference receives an automatic BCS bid if it finishes in the top 12 or top 16 ahead of a major conference champion. Northern Illinois is currently three BCS spots ahead of American Athletic Conference leader Central Florida.

It was a bitter defeat for Fresno State, which fell to 10-1, and senior quarterback Derek Carr, who threw six touchdown passes in defeat. Carr now has 45 for the season with only five interceptions.

Carr was narrowly outplayed, though, by San Jose State quarterback David Fales, who passed for 547 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

The teams combined for 1,382 yards.

San Jose State, with the win, improves to 6-6 and became bowl-eligible.
