The Galaxy said Friday that the week-old son of defender A.J. DeLaGarza, who was born with a serious heart defect, died Thursday.

Luca DeLaGarza was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, in which the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped.

“Heaven gained another angel yesterday,” A.J. DeLaGarza, 26, said in a Twitter post that was accompanied by a photograph of his son holding his father’s finger in his hand.

Luca was the first child for DeLaGarza, who is in his sixth season with the Galaxy, and his wife, Megan.

The Galaxy said that in honor of Luca, the club would hold a moment of silence before its game Friday night against the Colorado Rapids at StubHub Center in Carson.

Galaxy players also will wear black arm bands with the name “Luca” on them. Last week, Galaxy players wore T-shirts that said “Luca Knows Heart” in their game against D.C. United.

Fellow Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez also went on Twitter to offer his condolences Friday, saying to DeLaGarza and his wife that “my heart goes out to you. We will forever celebrate Luca and his life.”
