The Galaxy, plagued by inconsistent play in goal all season, may have found a solution by signing Panama national team star Jaime Penedo on a free transfer Monday.

Penedo, 31, will be added to the team’s roster after paperwork for a P1 visa and his international transfer certificate have been processed.

The Galaxy, with Carlo Cudicini and Brian Rowe splitting time in goal, have given up 27 goals in 22 games. Cudicini has played in 22 games and has a goals-against average of 1.20 but a save percentage of only 59%. Rowe has played in two games, giving up three goals but stopping 69% of the shots he has faced.

Penedo was impressive in Panama’s run to the Gold Cup final last month, beating Mexico twice. In a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the semifinals, he made a number of acrobatic saves in the last 10 minutes.

Penedo, who played two seasons in Europe with Italy’s Cagliari and Spain’s Ossauna, most recently played for Municipal in Guatemala.

Terms of Penedo’s contract with the Galaxy were not disclosed.
