In a thriller of a debut, the Jets made a last-second comeback Sunday to beat Tampa Bay, 18-17, a spectacular start for the rookie quarterback Smith.
But Tampa Bay's Lavonte Davis gave the quarterback an extra shove as he had stepped out of bounds, and was flagged for a late hit. That put the Jets in field-goal range and they immediately took and made the kick.
So Smith emerged victorious after two other first-year starting quarterbacks, Pryor and rookie Manuel, nearly led their teams to upsets.
Pryor's Raiders lost at Indianapolis, 21-17, and Manuel's Bills lost at home to New England, 23-21.
