Another landmark, males-only golf club considers admitting women

First came Augusta National. Then the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.

Now it seems that another landmark, males-only course might join the movement to admit women.

Officials at Muirfield in Scotland, which is one of nine sites in the regular rotation for the British Open, announced that its members have been asked to examine their exclusive policy, according to a statement published by the Scotsman newspaper.

“A working group has been empowered to consult with the membership and to make recommendations to the board about our future,” the statement was quoted as saying.

Augusta -- home of the Masters -- extended membership invitations to women for the first time in the summer of 2012. The R&A announced this week that it would hold a September vote on whether to open membership to females.

Muirfield was the site of Phil Mickelson’s first British Open victory last year.
