Jim Harbaugh: 49ers have to stay paranoid

SANTA CLARA -- The San Francisco 49ers have outscored their past two opponents, 79-3, and they’re coming off a team-record 621 yards of offense against Buffalo. Heading into Sunday’s home game against the New York Giants -- a rematch of last season’s NFC championship game -- the 49ers might just be the most dangerous, most complete team in football.

And that has San Francisco Coach Jim Harbaugh concerned.

“Nothing’s wrong, except nothing’s wrong,” Harbaugh said before practice Wednesday. “That’s why we have to keep asking those questions of ourselves.”

The problem -- or potential problem -- is complacency. If the 49ers start thinking too much of what they’ve accomplished, they could take their eye off the task at hand.

Safe to say, Harbaugh is aware of this.

“The law of averages say that you’re not going to keep getting the breaks,” he said. “You’re not going to stay at that spot. But, I think if you understand the concept of ‘scary good’ then you have a chance.

“Stay on your toes. Keep your guard up. Stay paranoid. And come out here every day and do what you believe in, which is the preparation. Make this meeting the best possible meeting it could be. Make this practice the best one of the season. Each down, each series, each game. The brilliance is in the basics. If you believe in that, then I think you’ve got a chance of understanding scary good.”
