Hope Solo enters not guilty plea to domestic violence charges

U.S. women’s national soccer team goalkeeper Hope Solo pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of domestic violence stemming from her arrest Saturday.

Solo was released without bail after appearing in court, and was ordered to not have contact with the alleged victims in the case. She was also told not to consume alcohol.

Solo, 32, was arrested at her sister’s home in Kirkland, Wash., early Saturday after she was accused of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew. Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray told the Seattle Times that a party was going on at the house when police arrived and that it “was an out-of-control situation.” He said Solo was arrested after police observed visible injuries to Solo’s sister and nephew.

Solo was booked on two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault. She is scheduled to make another court appearance Aug. 11.

Solo’s lawyer insisted his client didn’t commit a crime and said that she is the real victim of the alleged incident.

“Hope is not guilty of any crime,” attorney Todd Maybrown said in an email to the Associated Press on Saturday. “In fact, our investigation reveals that Hope was assaulted and injured during this unfortunate incident. We look forward to the opportunity to present the true facts in court and to having this matter behind Hope very soon.”

Solo plays for Seattle Reign FC of the National Women’s Soccer League and is a decorated U.S. national team player. She was part of the U.S. women’s gold-medal Olympic teams in 2008 and 2012 and was a member of the U.S. squad that won the 2006 World Cup. In 2009, she was named U.S. Soccer female athlete of the year.

Solo also participated in the television reality show “Dancing With the Stars” in 2011.

Solo was involved in another domestic violence incident in November 2012 when her then-fiance, Jerramy Stevens, was arrested for allegedly assaulting her. Stevens was never charged, however, and the two married shortly afterward.
