Dan Wheldon tributes planned for Indianapolis 500
Several tributes in honor of the late driver Dan Wheldon are planned at the Indianapolis 500 on May 27.
Wheldon won the famed race for the second time last year, then was killed Oct. 16 in a multi-car crash at the season finale of the Izod IndyCar Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was 33.
The Englishman often wore white-framed sunglasses, and the tributes include handing out white cardboard sunglasses to all fans to wear during the race’s parade lap and on laps 26 and 98 -- the numbers of Wheldon’s winning cars at the Indy 500, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced.
The race typically draws more than 200,000 spectators.
Bryan Herta, co-owner of the team for which Wheldon drove in the race last year, also will drive Wheldon’s winning 2011 car for one lap in Wheldon’s honor during the pre-race ceremonies.
Wheldon’s image also will be featured on the race’s tickets, and on technical-inspection stickers affixed to all 33 cars in the Indy 500 field.
