The injury means Heyward will miss the rest of the regular season, but that he might be able to return for the playoffs.
Heyward was batting against Mets left-hander Jonathan Niese in the top of the sixth inning when he was hit by a 90-mph fastball. He staggered after getting hit, and was grabbed by Mets catcher
Heyward never lost consciousness but stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes while being tended to by Braves trainers. He walked off the field under his own power and tapped his heart with his fist in an apparent conciliatory gesture to Niese.
"I wanted to elevate a fastball but it just kind of ran in on him. Obviously, no intent," Niese said. "I felt horrible. This game can be pretty dangerous."
