Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggests that firing Rob Ryan was bad idea

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has pretty much admitted that his decision to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was a bad one.

“We thought it was best for us to go in the direction that we are, and it doesn’t look good right now,” Jones said after the Cowboys were crushed 49-17 Sunday by the team that snatched up Ryan as its defensive coordinator, the New Orleans Saints.

Ryan’s current defense held the Cowboys to just 193 yards of offense, well below their season average of nearly 328 a game.

Meanwhile, the Dallas defense, under current coordinator Monte Kiffin, surrendered 625 yards to the Saints’ high-powered offense. That came just two weeks after giving up 623 yards during a 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions.

For the season, offense playing against the Cowboys are averaging almost 440 yards a game, making Dallas the lowest-ranked defense in the league. Under Ryan last year, Dallas had the No. 19 defense, giving up 355.4 yards a game.

Meanwhile, the Saints have gone from the league’s worst defense a year ago, allowing teams more than 440 yards a game, to No. 5, surrendering less than 318 yards a game this year.

“I have all the feelings that you have when you want to look back at a decision, and I realize when some of them work you have to have a few things go along with it,” Jones said.
