Johnny Manziel didn’t get the job done in the second half for the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night.

Filling in for injured starting quarterback Josh McCown, Manziel completed just four of 15 passes for 40 yards during the final two quarters. He was sacked three times during that span of the Browns’ 31-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Yet on social media Friday morning, many people are clamoring for Manziel to become Cleveland's permanent starter.

And those people might have a point.

Manziel had a strong first half against the Bengals, completing 11 of 18 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Even considering the subpar second half, it’s not inaccurate to say the second-year player showed some promise during his fourth NFL start.

That’s something the Browns should want to build on. And this season’s 2-7 start gives them an opportunity to do so. With the playoffs clearly out of the equation at this point, might as well start looking toward the future and give the team’s first-round draft pick from last year some experience.

After the game Thursday night, Manziel said he would “absolutely” like to be given such a chance. But with 10 days before the team’s next game, Coach Mike Pettine said he’s in no hurry to make a decision like that.

“When we get in and get back from this time off, we will assess what pool of players are available and go ahead and make those decisions from there,” Pettine said. “This will be a good time to step away and reassess where we are moving forward.”

What do you think the Browns should do?
