Fred Couples adds Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson to Presidents Cup team
Fred Couples used his captain’s picks to select 20-year-old Jordan Spieth and Webb Simpson to fill out the 12-man American Presidents Cup team. Spieth is the youngest American to play in the Presidents Cup.
Couples chose Spieth over Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson. Furyk had been on every American team since 1997.
The Presidents Cup is Oct. 3-6 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. The Americans have a 7-1-1 lead in the series. Their only loss was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.
International team captain Nick Price selected Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe and Marc Leishman of Australia. Neither has played in the Presidents Cup.
The U.S. roster: Spieth, Simpson, Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley, Steve Stricker, Bill Haas, Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson.
The International roster: Leishman, De Jonge, Adam Scott, Jason Day, Charl Schwartzel, Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen, Hideki Matsuyama, Branden Grace, Graham DeLaet, Richard Sterne and Angel Cabrera.
