Talks to bring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. return bout to Staples Center
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s return bout is in negotiations to be staged Sept. 7 at Staples Center, the boxer’s promoter told The Times on Friday.
Bob Arum said the 27-year-old Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 knockouts) was originally scheduled to return from his Sept. 15, 2012, unanimous-decision loss to middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on Aug. 3.
“But HBO wants to move off that,” Arum said. That fight is tentatively scheduled to be fought in Mexico.
Chavez Jr. was fined $900,000 and suspended nine months last year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for marijuana following his first career loss to Martinez.
In that bout, the son of the legendary champion from Mexico rallied impressively in the 12th round to nearly knock out Martinez.
Now, Arum said he’s planning for Chavez Jr. to fight Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KOs) at Staples.
“The date is open and we would love to host it,” Staples Center General Manager Lee Zeidman told The Times in a text message.
“We’ll be working on it next week,” Arum said.
