Kings’ Ben Scrivens gets NHL honor

Kings goaltender Ben Scrivens was honored Monday as the NHL first star of the week in recognition of his outstanding performances in replacing injured goalie Jonathan Quick.

Scrivens, acquired by the Kings from Toronto last summer with Matt Frattin as almost a footnote to the Jonathan Bernier trade, was 3-0-1 last week with a 0.66 goals-against average, .977 save percentage and two shutouts. His efforts helped the Kings improve to 14-6-1, their best record through the first 21 games of a season since they were 15-5-1 in the 1990-91 season.

He replaced Quick near the end of the Kings’ eventual 3-2 shootout loss at Buffalo and then was the winner in their 3-2 comeback victory over the New York Islanders last Thursday. He then recorded consecutive shutouts of the New Jersey Devils on Friday and the New York Rangers on Sunday.

Scrivens hasn’t allowed a goal in his last 155 minutes and two seconds of playing time. He leads the NHL with a 1.24 goals-against average, .955 save percentage and three shutouts in eight appearances.

After returning home from their East Coast trip, the Kings were to report to their El Segundo training center Monday at noon, when the day’s schedule was to be determined. They’re next scheduled to play on Tuesday, when they will face the Tampa Bay Lightning at Staples Center.

The second star of the week was Dallas center Tyler Seguin, who had five goals and seven points in three games, all victories for the Stars. That included a career-high four-goal game against Calgary.

The third star was Minnesota goalie Josh Harding, who was 3-0-0 with a 1.38 goals-against average and .939 save percentage. He helped the Wild improve to 13-4-4 for 30 points, the team’s most points through the first 21 games of a season in franchise history. He ranks second to Scrivens in goals-against average (1.25), save percentage (.946) and shutouts (tied at 2).
