There was no penalty called on the play in Sunday’s game, but a day later the NHL opted to fine Kings left wing Kyle Clifford for kneeing Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

The fine was for $2,756.41, which happens to be the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement, a penalty announced Monday afternoon by the NHL’s department of player safety.

Nugent-Hopkins, who had to be helped off the ice, left the game briefly after the incident, which occurred at 7:41 of the first period.

“Anytime you get a guy that sticks out his knee and knees a guy, we all hold our breath,” Edmonton Coach Dallas Eakins said in his media session after the Kings beat the Oilers, 2-1, in a shootout at Staples Center. “Nuge was able to return and then we will have to reassess him.

“Sometimes these things get worse overnight. Right now, we are hopeful that he dodged a bullet on a bad hit.”
