Kings part ways with goalie Mathieu Garon

The Kings got down to their 23-player roster limit Sunday after releasing goaltender Mathieu Garon from his training camp tryout.

This means that Ben Scrivens, who was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in June in the Jonathan Bernier deal, will be the backup goalie to starter Jonathan Quick. The team said that Garon will not be going to the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, N.H., which could have been a possibility.

The Kings had wanted to explore more options in regard to the backup spot, leading to Garon’s invitation to camp.

Still, Kings Coach Darryl Sutter’s preference is to give his No. 1 goalie a heavy workload and he is unlikely to depart from that pattern. So get ready to see a lot of Quick this season.

Garon wasn’t the only move by the Kings on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Kings moved closer to the roster limit by putting defenseman Jeff Schultz on waivers and sending three young forwards — left wing Tanner Pearson, center Linden Vey and right wing Tyler Toffoli — to Manchester.

Making significant leaps forward in camp were Pearson and center Nick Shore, who was sent down earlier. Toffoli struggled early on and got better in the latter stages of camp. It is not out of the question that Pearson, Vey and Toffoli will be back in Los Angeles at some point this season.
