Angel Yin, a 15-year-old amateur and freshman at Arcadia High, fired a four-under 68 and was in second place with most of the 111-player field finished for the day at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.
Feng, 24, is looking for her first victory at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is one of the LPGA's five major tournaments. However, she won another major, the LPGA Championship, in 2012.
Her round Thursday included six birdies and one bogey at the par-four 15th hole. Feng credited much of her solid play to being paired with LPGA Hall of Famer Amy Alcott, 58, who won the Kraft Nabisco Championship three times.
Alcott "was telling me all the secrets," Feng said.
Jennifer Rosales and Cristie Kerr both shot three-under 69s and were three shots behind Feng.
Top-ranked Inbee Park, the tournament's defending winner, struggled to a two-over 74 and blamed the round on a new putter she's trying out.
"I haven't been putting good with any putter," said Park, who managed only one birdie, on the par-five ninth hole. "I just don't know what is wrong."
