Metta World Peace signs deal with New York Knicks
Now he’s a Peace Knick. Ex-Lakers forward Metta World Peace found a new team Monday, agreeing to a two-year deal for about $3.2 million with the New York Knicks.
World Peace tweeted Monday: “Where Brooklyn at?” in a jab to the Brooklyn Nets, the Knicks’ local rival.
The second year of his deal is a player option, according to various reports.
The Lakers waived World Peace last week under the NBA’s amnesty provision in a cost savings move. World Peace, 33, averaged 12.4 points last season with the Lakers.
Sunday was the deadline for NBA teams with salary cap room to bid on World Peace, but no team did, allowing him to negotiate a deal with any team except the Lakers.
The Knicks will apparently pay him about $1.7 million in the upcoming season, with the Lakers picking up the rest of the $7.7 million owed on his salary.
World Peace played four seasons for the Lakers and won a title in 2010. He has also played for Houston, Sacramento, Indiana and Chicago.
His deal with the Knicks is something of a homecoming for World Peace. He was born in New York, played high school ball there and played for St. John’s in college.
