Chivas USA’s Erick Torres named Major League Soccer player of week
Chivas USA forward Erick Torres was voted Major League Soccer’s player of the week after leading his club to two victories, the league said Monday.
Torres twice scored the only goal to give Chivas USA 1-0 victories over the San Jose Earthquakes and the Montreal Impact last week, with the goal against Montreal coming in extra time at StubHub Center in Carson.
In fact, it was the third consecutive game in which Torres had performed the feat. He also scored the lone goal in Chivas USA’s 1-0 win against Real Salt Lake at StubHub Center on June 28.
Torres, nicknamed “Cubo,” is by far Chivas USA’s biggest scoring threat. He’s scored 12 of the club’s 17 goals overall so far this season.
Of course, Torres likely wouldn’t have won the weekly honor without Chivas USA’s defense -- led by goalkeeper Dan Kennedy -- that shut out the team’s last three opponents.
