Carl Edwards wins rain-plagued Sprint Cup race at Bristol

Carl Edwards won a rain-plagued NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, fittingly with the final two laps under caution as showers began to fall again.

The Food City 500 was delayed nearly two hours before the start and for another three hours after 124 laps.

The race restarted on Lap 167 with Kurt Busch taking the lead from Matt Kenseth for the lead. The race had already run 43 laps under caution.

Edwards lead a sweep of Fords, with Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. taking second and Aric Almirola of Richard Petty Motorsports finishing third.

Edwards took control of the race with 77 laps left to go when he stayed on the track during a caution period. He held the lead during the restart and was in the lead when caution lights came on with only a few laps left. When another downpour began, NASCAR had to call the race.

NASCAR officials later admitted the caution was created by malfunctioning lights, which then compromised the rest of the race.

Tony Stewart took fourth while Marcos Ambrose was fifth and pole-sitter Denny Hamlin was sixth. The top 10 was completed by Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers and rookie Kyle Larson.

The season-opening Daytona 500 was also delayed by rain for almost six hours on Feb. 23 before Dale Earnhardt Jr. took a victory shortly before midnight.
