For Olympics, quote from Constitution on U.S. goalie’s mask must go

Olympic rules have forced American hockey goalie Jessie Vetter to remove a quote from the U.S. Constitution that adorned the mask she will wear at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Mask artist Ron Slater told InGoal magazine that he had to paint over the words “We the People.”

“No writings of any kind to promote the country is allowed,” Slater wrote in an email to InGoal explaining his action. “A sort of ‘our country is better than your country’ kind of thing that the IOC frowns upon.”

Vetter also had to have the Olympic rings on the chin of the mask removed, replacing them with stars.

She did, however, get to keep a USA logo on the side that was created with 23-karat gold-leaf embossing.
