Leave it to the Oregon Ducks, who have one of the most prolific offenses of recent years, to find an unusual way to score: the one-point safety.
During Thursday's Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State, Wildcats defensive lineman Javonta Boyd blocked an extra point after Oregon had taken a 31-10 lead. Defensive end Ryan Mueller grabbed the ball out of the air at the 1-yard line and retreated into his own end zone while trying to find room to run. Because, if he was able to take the ball all the way to the other end of the field, Kansas State would get two points.
Mueller lateraled the ball to teammate Allen Chapman, who was tackled in the end zone. The result: a one-point safety.
"We got a safety for one point today, and I had no idea what that was," Oregon Coach Chip Kelly said after the game. "When they told me they were going to give us one point, I said, 'We'll take it.'"
How rare is a one-point safety? It apparently has happened only four other times in college football history, according to the Quirky Research blog.
