Peyton Manning will keep NFL single-season yardage record

Upon further review, NFL record keeper Elias Sports Bureau agrees with game officials that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning passed for 266 yards on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders to eclipse the single-season passing yardage record of Drew Brees.

In question was a seven-yard pass to receiver Eric Decker that from one camera angle appeared to be a lateral, which means it would be ruled a run by Decker instead of a completion for Manning.

Elias statisticians often review plays to get an accurate accounting of yardage figures and decided that Manning’s toss to Decker went forward at least a foot or two. Manning finished the season with 5,477 passing yards, one more than New Orleans Saints quarterback Brees had in 2011.

NFL spokesman Michael Signora released a statement confirming the review:

“The stats crew at the game scored this play as a forward pass. During the course of a season, there are many similar plays which could be reviewed by the Elias. In this case, the determination of Elias is that the fairest resolution is for the ruling of the on-site stats crew to stand.”

Manning also set the single-season record for touchdown passes with 55, eclipsing the mark of 50 that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had in 2007. Manning also helped the Broncos become the highest scoring team in league history with 606 points, surpassing the 589 by the Patriots in 2007.
