Winless 76ers cause Papa John’s to change pizza promotion

Winning a game in the NBA is hard.

No one knows that better right now than the Philadelphia 76ers, who are 0-11 this season. Every other team, even the Lakers, has at least three victories.

Things have gotten so bad with the 76ers that even one of their sponsors seems to have lost faith that the team will ever find its way into the win column.

In October, the 76ers and Papa John’s announced a promotion called “Sixers Win, You Win”:

“The day after every Sixers win, fans receive 50 percent off their online order at participating Papa John’s locations.”

Of course you see the problem with that marketing campaign.

So Papa John’s has decided to lower the bar a teensy bit.

Here’s what the pizza company said in an ad on Thursday, the day after the 76ers’ 101-90 loss to Boston:

“When the Sixers score 90, you win at Papa John’s!

“All season long the day after the Sixers score 90 or more points you get 50% OFF your regular menu price online order! The Sixers scored 90 in last night’s game against the Celtics, so you get 50% OFF your entire online order TODAY!”

We should probably note that Wednesday was the first time in two weeks the 76ers hit the 90-point mark and only the fourth time they’ve done so all season. So Papa John’s probably still won’t be delivering half-price pizzas too often.

But, still, every now and then Philadelphia basketball fans will be rewarded for their suffering and Papa John’s will be getting its name out there. So it’s a win-win for everyone.

Oops, sorry Sixers -- poor choice of words.
