Santonio Holmes reportedly to undergo MRI on injured foot Monday

Santonio Holmes was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday after injuring his left foot -- perhaps seriously -- during the New York Jets’ 34-0 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

X-Rays on the star receiver’s foot Sunday came back negative, according to ESPN New York, but Holmes was seen leaving the Meadowlands in a golf cart while holding crutches and with his left foot in a boot.

The injury came at a bad time for the Jets in more ways than one.

Down 17-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter, Holmes caught a short pass from quarterback Mark Sanchez at the San Francisco 40-yard line, where he suddenly fell to the ground without any contact at all.

The ball flew out of Holmes’ hands on the way down, and as the receiver rolled around grabbing his leg, Carlos Rogers returned the fumble 51 yards for a touchdown to put away the game for the 49ers.

The timing of the injury was also bad for the Jets in that it came just a week after All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis tore a ligament in his left knee and was likely lost for the season.

“We’ve got to play with who we’ve got,” quarterback Mark Sanchez said. “None of those guys are going to get better overnight.”
