Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will return to the MGM Grand ring March 8 against Mexican countryman Alfredo Angulo, the same place where Alvarez lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the most lucrative pay-per-view fight in history.

Alvarez promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions confirmed the deal has been completed for the Showtime pay-per-view fight.

“It will be a toe-to-toe battle and that’s the name of the card,” Schaefer said. “At 154 pounds, it’s the most exciting fight can you make.”

Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 knockouts) lost a majority decision to Mayweather in September, giving up his WBC light-middleweight belt.

Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs) also lost his last fight, suffering orbital bone damage in Carson against Cuba’s Erislandy Lara.

But Angulo is an aggressor, and there’s apparently tension between the countrymen.

Schaefer said he’d also like to pit unbeaten Los Angeles WBC super-bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz against former champion Cristian Mijares of Mexico.

Omar Figueroa will also defend his belt against Ricardo Alvarez, Canelo’s brother.

Friday, Schaefer also said recently beaten welterweight champion Adrien Broner exercised his rematch clause to fight Marcos Maidana, either April 19 in San Antonio or April 26 at StubHub Center in Carson.
