Stanley Cup spends a couple of days in a familiar area -- the South Bay

The Stanley Cup spent its first two days with its newest owners in a familiar part of Southern California — the South Bay.

Every Kings player lives in Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach except one (Willie Mitchell, Venice), making it a natural destination for the Cup after the Kings captured it again.

It was at the North End Bar & Grill in Hermosa Beach within a few hours of the Kings’ double-overtime victory Friday over the New York Rangers at Staples Center.

The North End was the same place the Kings brought the Cup when they won it two years ago. This time, however, about a hundred fans waited outside the establishment to get a peek of the trophy and jubilant Kings players. Some fans even brought folding chairs for the wait, as the minutes ticked toward midnight ... and well past it.

The Cup spent Saturday at the Hermosa Beach home of Kings center Jeff Carter. In the afternoon, players took it down to the ocean and took photos on the sand. Then the Cup ended up at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach as part of a private party held by Kings Coach Darryl Sutter, a Manhattan Beach resident.

Mike Altieri, the Kings’ vice president of communications, paraphrased Sutter at the event, saying, “Once you’ve won the Stanley Cup, when you get it back, it feels like it’s an old friend.”

On Sunday, it spent a few hours individually with players Justin Williams, Robyn Regehr and Willie Mitchell. Each player will get at least one full day with it later this summer.

Williams and Alec Martinez plan to take the Stanley Cup on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Monday after the Kings complete a parade in downtown Los Angeles. There will be also be a sold-out fan rally at Staples Center immediately after the parade.
