Tiger Woods’ nightmare of a U.S. Open is over.

Woods shot a six-over-par 76 during the second round to finish the tournament with a 16-over-par 156, the worst 36-hole performance of his career. The three-time U.S. Open winner made eight bogeys Friday, and failed to make the cut of a major tournament for only the fifth time as a professional.

Woods bogeyed five of his last eight holes to remain mired at the bottom of the leaderboard. He criticized his play after the round, saying, “I wanted to shoot 5 or 6 today, but I wanted to be on the other side of it.”

“On a golf course like this, you can get exposed,” Woods said. “You have to be dialed in and, obviously, I didn’t have that.”

Woods finished the first round Thursday with a 10-over-par 80. Prior to the cringe-inducing feat, Woods’ previous worst performance at the U.S. Open came in 1996 when he shot 77 as a amateur.

Woods, who last missed the U.S. Open cut in 2006, is scheduled to compete next at the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., on July 2.

Hole 10, High Dunes: Par 4, 483 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +11 (Tied for 154th)

Woods opens with a solid first shot, driving the ball about 280 yards onto the left fairway. Woods hit only six of 14 fairways Thursday, so it’s a good first shot. Unfortunately, his second shot lands in the rough left of the green about 20 yards from the pin. Adding (potential) injury to insult, he slips and falls on his backside while searching for the ball on a grassy hill. His third shot goes far right, setting up a 30-foot par putt, which he just misses. Woods’ second round starts with a bogey.

Hole 11, Shadows: Par 4, 544 yards - Result: Par | Score: +11 (154)

Another strong tee shot puts Woods on the left fairway about 210 yards away from the flag. Woods is so far two for two on hitting fairways. A nice second shot lands him about 34 feet left of the hole to set up a good chance for par. Woods achieves par after missing a 37 footer.

Hole 12, The Narrows: Par 4, 284 yards - Result: Birdie | Score: +10 (T151)

The mini streak of good tee shots is over. Woods pulls it into the front greenside bunker, but could still salvage par -- or possibly better -- on this one. His second shot is vintage Tiger, landing four feet from the pin. He sinks his four-foot birdie putt. He’ll need many more of those if he’s going to have a chance at making the cut.

Hole 13, Eagle Eye: Par 4, 551 yards - Result: Par | Score: +10 (T147)

Woods splits the fairway from the tee as he tries to avoid a repeat of his bogey on the same hole Thursday. His approach shot lands puts him in prime position for a least par after it lands on the backside of the green about 25 feet from the hole. He comes up short on the birdie putt and settles for par. A decent start for Woods after Thursday’s struggles.

Hole 14, Cape Fear: Par 4, 513 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +11 (T150)

Woods finished with a triple bogey on 14 Thursday after teeing off into a bunker, and he starts off the hole by landing in a left-side trap about 167 yards to the pin. He struggles to recover, sending the ball 36 yards wide of the pin after landing on the right fairway. A solid approach places him 12 feet from the pin, but he misreads the putt and settles for his second bogey of the morning.

Hole 15, Lone Fir: Par 3, 144 yards - Result: Par | Score: +11 (T150)

Woods puts in a solid approach, landing on the green about 25 feet behind the pin. His birdie putt rolls past the hole and he salvages par. On Thursday, his birdie putt came up a little short of the hole. Through six holes, Woods is one-over par.

Hole 16, Beached: Par 4, 416 yards - Result: Par | Score: +11 (T150)

After missing eight fairways Thursday, Woods hits his fourth fairway of the morning with a 278-yard drive. He follows with a 120-yard approach to set up a challenging 24-foot putt for birdie. He misses the putt by inches and taps in for par. Woods is looking respectable, so far. He’s one-over par for the day -- through seven holes Thursday he was five over.

Hole 17, Derailed: Par 3, 226 yards - Result: Par | Score: +11 (T150)

A solid 226 yards off the tee places him on the green about 20 yards away for birdie. The second shot isn’t as good, setting up a 12-foot par putt, which Woods nails.

Hole 18, Tahoma: Par 4, 514 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +12 (T152)

Sending a 276-yard drive to the left link that avoids the deep bunker in the middle of the hole, Woods hits his fifth, second-round fairway. He drops his second shot onto the left fairway about 32 yards from the cup. A decent approach puts him 15 feet away for par. His attempt to end the back nine on a positive note comes up short, forcing him to settle for a three-foot bogey putt. The 14-time major winner is two over for the day for a round that stands at more than 2 1/2 hours so far.

Hole 1, Puget Sound: Par 5, 593 yards - Result: Birdie | Score: +11 (T149)

Playing with little pressure or expectations at this point, Woods makes another fairway and gets a favorable roll on his second shot to move to about 55 feet of the pin. He secures his second birdie of the morning with a four-foot putt. On Thursday, this would have been par, but organizers changed the hole to a par 5 overnight.

Hole 2, Foxy: Par 4, 403 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +12 (T151)

Woods looks a lot more relaxed today, sharing a laugh with the gallery after hitting into the left rough 291 yards off the tee. He digs out to put the ball onto the fairway, 40 yards from the pin. Woods can’t get close enough to the pin with his third shot and has to tap in for bogey after missing a 16-foot putt. Only three golfers are behind Woods on the leaderboard.

Hole 3, Blown Out: Par 3, 207 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +13 (T151)

Another Bogey for Woods. A poor shot off the tee landed in the sand trap, making it impossible for the 39-year-old to salvage par. Woods falls to three over for the day.

Hole 4, Hazard’s Ascent: Par 4, 494 yards - Result: Par | Score: +13 (T153)

Woods manages to find the fairway after taking a steep climb to the hole and follows up with arguably his best approach shot of the tournament. However, he fails to sink a 10-foot putt birdie. He sinks a two-footer for par. Woods’ playing partners -- Rickie Fowler (even on the day) and Louis Oosthuizen (-2) -- are fairing better than him.

Hole 5, Free Fall: Par 4, 486 yards - Result: Par | Score: +13 (T152)

After a 299-yard drive to the left fairway, Woods makes another solid approach to the pin. The shot sets up what appears to be a pretty easy six-foot putt for birdie, but his attempt runs wide. Not much has gone Woods’ way the last two days, but at least he’s looking good for a sub-80 finish.

Hole 6, Deception Point: Par 4, 512 yards - Result: Par | Score: +13 (T151)

A bad tee shot puts Woods in the rough, but a strong recovery lands him on the green with his second swing. He misses a long, 40-foot putt, but sinks his fourth shot for par.

Hole 7, Humpback: Par 4, 506 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +14 (T153)

A nice, long drive doesn’t make up for woes on the green as Woods miscalculates a downhill 20-footer by about eight feet. He settles for bogey on a one-foot putt to move to four over for the round. He is tied with playing partner Rickie Fowler, who has bogeyed his last three holes.

Hole 8, High Road / Low Road: Par 5, 582 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +15 (154)

Hitting his ninth fairway of the day -- a marked improvement over Thursday -- Woods follows with a 312-yarder that lands 65 feet from the hole. He eventually misses two putts, including a 10-footer for par, and settles for his seventh bogey on the day.

Hole 9, Olympus: Par 3, 237 yards - Result: Bogey | Score: +16 (154)

Play has been delayed on the ninth hole as medics tend to Jason Day, who complained about feeling dizzy while on the course. Once play resumes, Woods drives the ball 213 yards onto the right side of the green to set up a long putt for birdie. He misses a short three-footer to finish the round -- and his tournament -- with a bogey. He wraps up the tournament with a 16-over-par 156 after finishing with a six-over 76 on the day.
