Tiger Woods back in record-setting form at Bridgestone event

Tiger Woods has only two major golf records left in his sights: passing Jack Nicklaus for the most wins in Grand Slam events (18) and overtaking Sam Snead for most PGA Tour victories (82).

Along the way, Woods continues to set other marks, and if he were to win Sunday at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, he would become the first golfer to win two different events eight times.

Woods tied Snead in that department with an eighth victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open a record eight times.

Woods, who is at 15-under-par 195 after three rounds, is in excellent position to win his 79th event with a seven-shot lead heading into the final round Sunday at Firestone Country Club. He’s unbeaten in 22 events when holding a lead of three or more shots after 54 holes. He’s 93-6 when sharing or holding a lead of less than three strokes.

“I just want to go out there and execute my game plan,” said Woods, who tied a career low round of 61 on Friday and followed it with a 68 on Saturday. “Whatever game plan I’m going to implement [Sunday], just go execute it. It all starts with what the weather is doing, and then I build it from there.”

It’s going to take a contender coming close to Woods’ course-record 61 to challenge him. Woods admitted he struggled at times Saturday, but his game held up.

“Today was a day that I didn’t quite have it,” Wood said Saturday. “But I scored. And that’s the name of the game, posting a number, and I did today. I grinded my way around that golf course.”
