Tim Tebow reportedly spending 99% of his time in Patriots camp at QB

Tim Tebow has been seen taking part in catch-and-run drills during the early days of the New England Patriots training camp.

Does this mean we’ll finally get to see if all those people who have been saying for years that the quarterback with the questionable throwing skills would make a much better NFL tight end are right?

After all, the Patriots seem to have a glaring need at tight end without stars Rob Gronkowski (out indefinitely with injury) and Aaron Hernandez (cut from team after being charged with murder). And they just so happened to sign Tebow earlier in the off-season.

Wow, Coach Bill Belichick really is a genius!

Not so fast, says Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. Tebow is actually spending 99% of his time in camp at the quarterback position, according to Volin, taking part only in meetings in the quarterbacks room and running the third-team offense in practice.

For five minutes a day, though, he participates in that one drill with the skill players. But Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Tebow is only taking part in that drill because he is a scrambling quarterback and the activity emphasizes ball protection and escaping defenders.

“He’s just practicing his open-field running,” McDaniels said. “We know Tim has a skill set that some of these other guys don’t possess in terms of his ability to run with it, scramble with it when he has it in his hands.”

McDaniels added of Tebow: “He’s put in a lot of time and effort to improve his individual skill set to play the position of quarterback in our offense, and I think every day is a learning tool for him. It’s hard to gauge things at this point, but he’s going to do all those things, and I’m sure he’ll listen and take the coaching the way he always has and try to work to get better every day.”

So there you have it. The Patriots have no intention of using Tebow in any other role than quarterback. You can take that to the bank -- after all, those guys have never been known to try anything sneaky, have they?
