Tomas Hertl says he practices the shot daily.
The 19-year-old Czech put the puck through his legs and shot it over the right shoulder of Rangers backup goalie Martin Bironto to give the Sharks an 8-2 lead at 12:05 in the third period. San Jose would go on to claim a 9-2 victory.
“That was special,” Sharks' captain Joe Thornton said of the goal. “You don't see that too often. That's something I don't have in my bag. That was pretty. It's been fun to watch him.”
At the age of 19 years and 330 days, Hertl is the youngest player to score four goals in a game since Jimmy Carson did it on March 30, 1988, at 19 years and 254 days. Hertl also tied the team record for most goals in a game, set by Owen Nolan on Dec. 19, 1995.
“This is a dream,” said Hertl, who has six goals and seven points just three games into his NHL career. “This is crazy. I've never scored more than two in a game, maybe.”
