UCLA football: Bruins had opportunities in loss to Arizona State

A football game is like a living organism. The environment changes, so does the game.

Here are three tipping points during UCLA’s 38-33 loss to Arizona State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

— Quarterback Brett Hundley’s swing pass was intercepted by Carl Bradford, who went 18 yards for a touchdown. It turned a four-point Arizona State lead into a 21-10 advantage early in the second quarter.

— On second-and-goal at the five-yard line in the second quarter, UCLA had Myles Jack slam into the line. UCLA settled for a field goal with 47 seconds left. Arizona State went 62 yards for a touchdown in 35 seconds for a 35-13 halftime lead.

— Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 32-yard field-goal attempt stayed wide right with 4:38 left in the game. It would have cut the Arizona State lead to two, changing the dynamics of the Bruins’ last drive. UCLA got the ball back with three minutes left with no timeouts, needing to go 65 yards for a touchdown.
