Oregon State hands UCLA its first loss
UCLA’s reign as the only undefeated major college football team in Los Angeles is over.
The No. 19 Bruins were upset by Oregon State, 27-20, at the Rose Bowl on Saturday as UCLA (3-1) lost its first game under Coach Jim Mora.
Meanwhile, Oregon State (2-0) racked up its second upset of the season. In its season opener two weeks ago, the Beavers beat No. 13 Wisconsin, 10-7.
UCLA was favored to win by about a touchdown, but the Bruins never led against the Beavers, who frequently gashed UCLA’s defense for big gains.
Bruins’ redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley put up some big numbers, completing 27 of 42 passes for 372 yards and a touchdown, but he also had two passes intercepted and had several passes sail off target. Receiver Shaquelle Evans caught six passes for 148 yards and a touchdown.
UCLA rushed for only 72 yards, far below its season average of 311.3 entering the game. Running back Johnathan Franklin had 45 yards in 12 carries. And UCLA converted only two of 15 third-down plays.
Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion was 24 for 35 with 379 yards passing, with two touchdowns and an interception. Receivers Brandin Cooks (six catches, 175 yards, a touchdown) and Markus Wheaton (nine catches, 150 yards, a touchdown) each had big games.
As a team, Oregon State outgained UCLA, 501 yards to 444.
The Bruins travel to Boulder next week to play Colorado. That game is scheduled to be aired on the Pac-12 Network.
