Upton brothers each hit 100th homer on same night

Big league brothers Justin and B.J. Upton each hit his 100th career home run on Friday night. Elder brother B.J. was even outdone by his younger sibling.

Justin, who plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks, homered against the Philadelphia Phillies in the second inning for No. 100 and about an hour later B.J., who plays for the Tampa Bay Rays, connected against the Baltimore Orioles to match it.

“It was cool. I’m happy for him,” Justin said after the Diamondbacks beat the Phillies, 4-2. “It’s a big night for the family.”

The brothers also hit their 99th homers on the same night (July 20).

“It was mentioned after the last game,” Justin said. “I definitely wanted to beat him to it.”

The brothers have shared a lot in common in their pro careers. Each averages about 15 home runs and 70 RBIs a season, a bit underwhelming for their skill sets. Each broke into the majors a couple of weeks shy of his 20th birthday.

“I was just texting him,” B.J. told reporters after the Rays beat the Orioles, 2-0. “He said he got his before mine, but it’s all good. It was cool to do that on the same day.”

Even more impressive might be that B.J. now has 100 homers and 200 stolen bases before the age of 28, joining an elite list with Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Cesar Cedeno, Eric Davis, Rickey Henderson, Lloyd Moseby and Hanley Ramirez.
