U.S. men rout Britain in basketball, 118-78

The U.S. men’s basketball team apparently isn’t having much difficulty adapting to playing overseas, at least if Thursday’s exhibition against Britain was any indication.

Team USA ran its exhibition record to 3-0 moving closer to the London Olympics with a 118-78 trouncing of Britain in Manchester, England, though the team led by 18 at halftime.

That was a far cry from the team’s lackluster victory over Brazil on Monday in Washington, D.C., when the U.S. trailed by 10 after the first quarter and wound up winning by only 11 points.

National team Coach Mike Krzyzewski was internationally sensitive heading into Thursday’s game, making sure not to dismiss the undermanned opponent.

He told USAbasketball.com that Britain is a “very good shooting team…. Their guard play is solid – well conceived offense, and they have played well. They played well against France and against Spain. So, it will be a good contest for us.”

Well, it was a good contest for players who don’t expect to get much action. Everyone got plenty of time on the court, which is what happens when garbage time comes early after halftime.

Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams led the U.S. with 19 points each. Six U.S. players scored in double figures, and Anthony Davis, who figures not to see much time when the competition gets stiff, played nearly 13 minutes, scoring 11 points.

The U.S. team’s next game is Sunday against Argentina in Barcelona.
