Big-time golf could be returning to Southern California.

The U.S. Golf Assn. has extended an invitation to Torrey Pines to host the 2021 U.S. Open, according to several media reports.

“It’s a great win for San Diego,” the city’s new mayor, Kevin Faulconer, told U-T San Diego. “The fact that we’ve been selected again speaks volumes as to how this city came together and put on a world-class tournament in ’08.

The San Diego City Council will soon vote on the matter.

Torrey Pines qualifies as one of the sport’s landmarks and was the scene of that historic 2008 Open showdown between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. Hobbling across the course on an injured knee, Woods prevailed in a playoff.
