USC lineman Abe Markowitz is back with the Trojans

USC lineman Abe Markowitz began his career as a walk-on and he is ending it the same.

Markowitz, who was granted a sixth year eligibility by the NCAA, practiced with the Trojans on Saturday, the first day of training camp in preparation for the Aug. 29 opener at Hawaii.

Markowitz, 6 feet 1 and 305 pounds, came to USC in 2008 as a walk-on from Punahou High in Hawaii.

He was awarded a scholarship in the fall of 2010 but sat out the 2010 and 2011 seasons because of foot injuries.

Coach Lane Kiffin, citing scholarship reductions that resulted from NCAA sanctions, said during Sun Bowl preparations last December that no scholarship was available for Markowitz in 2013.

“We’re not bringing him back,” Kiffin said. “We don’t have room.”

Markowitz’s status with the Trojans was clouded further after he was declared academically ineligible on the eve of the Sun Bowl. The graduate student did not participate in spring practice while petitioning for another year of eligibility.

He was allowed to return, but is doing so as a walk-on.
