Cody Kessler gained some momentum in USC’s quarterback competition, passing for 231 yards and three touchdowns in a scrimmage Friday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Kessler completed 20 of 28 passes, with no interceptions.

Fellow third-year sophomore Max Wittek completed only two of seven passes for 15 yards.

Coach Lane Kiffin said he would have to see film of the scrimmage before making any definitive evaluations.

The Trojans open the season Aug. 29 at Hawaii.

Wittek started the scrimmage and the Trojans went three and out in four series against the first-team defense.

Asked if the quarterbacks’ performances Friday pushed him any closer to making a decision about the starter, Kiffin said, “You’ve got to take in the variables. One guy didn’t really have many opportunities because the defense was performing so well, so we’ll see.”

Freshman receiver Darreus Rogers caught eight passes for 99 yards, including touchdowns of seven and three yards. Tailback Buck Allen turned a short reception into a 30-yard touchdown.
