USC football: Open practices are good for Trojans, Ed Orgeron says
USC interim Coach Ed Orgeron reopened practices to the media Wednesday, ending a lockout ordered by former coach Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin, who was fired Sunday, had continued a long tradition of open practices during his first two seasons.
But in 2011, Kiffin restricted the reporting of injuries, causing some outlets, including The Times, to choose not to attend practices. This season, Kiffin closed practices to the media completely.
Orgeron reverted to the previous open-door policy.
“I miss you all,” he joked to reporters. “No, I think it’s good for the team, it’s good for USC. I like the exposure — it’s part of USC, part of what Coach [Pete] Carroll built with us.
“The energy, the excitement, the good and the bad.”
