The comeback attempt of a five-time Wimbledon champion fell short here Friday, when Venus Williams was ousted by Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

Williams turned 34 on June 17, has a syndrome that brings symptoms of fatigue, and appeared to tire in the match after winning the first set, 7-5. The final score was 5-7, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

Williams dumped her final shot into the bottom of the net, a tired-looking ending to a long third-round match.

Kvitova, a tall left-hander who won the Wimbledon title in 2011, leaped in celebration. She said afterward, “I was really trying and fighting on every point, because that’s what you have to do against her.”

The final statistics showed Kvitova with 48 winners, Williams with just 25.
