Watch Phil Mickelson lip out putt to miss shooting a 59 [Video]

Phil Mickelson rebounded from a lackluster outing at Torrey Pines last week to nearly become the sixth PGA Tour player to card a 59.

Unfortunately, as you can see from the video above, his 25-foot birdie putt on his final hole Thursday at the Phoenix Open curled around the lip of the cup and stayed out, leaving him in the lead with a 60.

“When it was a foot out, I just couldn’t see it missing either way,” Mickelson said via a tweet on the PGA Tour website. “It was right in the center.”

Mickelson did tie the course record at the par-71 TPC Scottsdale course, but as he told the Golf Channel later in an interview, “You don’t get chances to shoot 59 very often and to have that putt on line, I’m kind of mortified it didn’t go in.”

Mickelson, who began his round on the back nine, said he was thinking 59 on No. 10. He obviously heard that Bo Van Pelt shot a 59 in a practice round Wednesday.

With about half of the field still on the course, Mickelson appeared to have a safe lead. Ryan Palmer, Brandt Snedeker, Padraig Harrington and Ted Potter Jr. are tied for second at 64. There are six more players at 65 and four more at 66, with more likely to join.

The five players who have carded a 59 on the PGA Tour: Al Geiberger in 1977 at the Memphis Open; Chip Beck in 1991 at the Las Vegas Invitational; David Duval in 1999 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic; Paul Goydos in 2010 at the John Deere Classic; and Stuart Appleby in 2010 at the Greenbrier Classic.
