World Cup tickets selling at a brisk pace

The World Cup won’t kick off for 3 1/2 months but already tickets remain available for just seven of the tournament’s 64 matches, according to FIFA.

With fewer than five days remaining before the latest sales period ends, more than 2.5 million tickets have been sold, with organizers saying that makes the Brazil World Cup one of the most successful in terms of tickets sold.

The 1994 World Cup in the U.S. still holds the attendance record of 3.59 million, which broke the previous mark by more than 1 million. The 2010 tournament in South Africa claimed an overall attendance of 3.18 million.

Of the seven matches that have yet to sell out for this summer’s event, the group-play game pairing Greece and Ivory Coast in Fortaleza and games between Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina and Russia and South Korea in Cuiaba appear to be the least popular.

FIFA doesn’t release the number of unclaimed tickets for each game but the Greece-Ivory Coast game on June 24 was the only match listed with “high availability.”

In this sales stage, which ends Tuesday, tickets were available on a first-come, first-served basis and more than two-third of the matches sold out in less than three hours, according to the Associated Press. The next sales phase begins April 15.
