Co-opting the referees? 1972 basketball Olympians( Associated Press / January 16, 2013 )
The matchup between the United States and the Soviet Union at the 1972 Munich Games remains one of the most controversial moments in Olympic history. The U.S. was trailing in the final moments of the game but sank two free throws to pull ahead. What happened next was a nail-biting blur of timeouts, reset clocks and questionable refereeing. (The Guardian offers up this thrilling account.) When it was over, the U.S. players were sure they'd won. The refs said otherwise. The Americans appealed the loss, but of the five judges on the jury, three were from Communist countries. The appeal was rejected 3-2.
