Stanford star Christian McCaffrey will skip Sun Bowl to focus on NFL draft preparation

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey’s college career is ending a game earlier than expected.

After leading the nation in all-purpose yards for the second straight year, McCaffrey announced Monday on Twitter that he will not play with his teammates in the Hyundai Sun Bowl against North Carolina on Dec. 30. Instead, he will focus on preparing for next spring’s NFL draft.

"Very tough decision, but I have decided not to play in the Sun Bowl so I can begin my draft prep immediately," McCaffrey wrote. "Thx to all my teammates for their 100% support — It means a lot to me. Go Cardinal!"

McCaffrey had a record 3,864 all-purpose yards in 2015 and 2,327 in 2016 despite an undisclosed injury that caused him to miss the Cardinal's Oct. 15 game against Notre Dame and appeared to slow him in at least two others.

Last week, LSU star running back Leonard Fournette announced he would not play alongside his teammates in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against Louisville on Dec. 31. Having already decided to enter the upcoming draft, Founette said skipping the bowl game was "best for my future."
