Wrong-way horse disrupts race at Santa Anita

There was Roy “Wrong Way” Riegels running 69 yards in the wrong direction in the 1929 Rose Bowl, and now a 2-year-old colt, Spinning Love, has accomplished the same feat at Santa Anita Park.

On Friday in the second race, Spinning Love, in the No. 1 post position, came out of the starting gate in the six-furlong race and soon jumped over the temporary inside rail, unseating jockey Alonso Quinonez and then running in the opposite direction through the club house turn and into the stretch.

“It was an unfortunate scenario,” said Spinning Love’s trainer, Tim Yakteen. “You seldom see anything like that.”

Stewards immediately radioed outriders about the loose horse, and track announcer Trevor Denman made an annoucement during the race. Jockeys briefly stopped riding. No horses or jockeys were injured.

And there was good news for bettors.

The race was declared a “no contest” by the stewards, resulting in refunds of $267,505 on daily doubles, exactas, trifectas and superfectas as well as win, place and show wagers. For Pick 3s, 4s and 5s, the race was considered an “all” race, with all tickets alive.
