Sinus infection sidelines Haas at Pacific Life Open

He had a scheduled quarterfinal match against top-seeded Federer, who’s now into the semifinals against either Mardy Fish or David Nalbandian.

No mas, no Haas.

It was a sinus infection, not his persistent right shoulder problems, that forced Tommy Haas of Germany to withdraw from his scheduled quarterfinal match this afternoon against top-seeded Roger Federer at the Pacific Life Open.

Haas, who had his third shoulder surgery in November, had been on his best run in months – defeating No. 6 Andy Roddick in the second round and No. 11 Andy Murray in the fourth.

This is the second time Haas had to withdraw in the midst of the Indian Wells event. In 2006, he beat Andre Agassi in the third round and pulled out before his next match because of a stomach virus.

The walkover puts Federer into the semifinals against either unseeded Mardy Fish or No. 7 David Nalbandian.

The tournament has been hit by injury/illness problems on consecutive days. On Thursday, Lindsay Davenport pulled out of her quarterfinal match against Jelena Jankovic because of an injured back after losing the first set, 6-2.
