Briefs: McConnell on runner-up

USA Blue team beat USA White, 11-6, Sunday to win the championship of the first USA Water Polo National League. Attacker Nolan McConnell (Laguna Beach High, Long Beach St.) played for the USA White team. He had an assist in the title game.

In the third-place game Sunday, the Olympic Club outlasted the New York Athletic Club, 11-10, and USA Red downed Alumni, 10-5, in the fifth-place game.

The two-day tournament started Saturday and was held at Acalanes High in Lafayette, Calif.

Fischer sisters on Team USA

Sisters Makenzie and Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach High were two of 13 players named by Coach Adam Krikorian to the USA Women’s Senior National Team roster for the upcoming FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament. The Fischers will compete with Team USA April 28-May 3 at Auckland, New Zealand.

Team USA will open the tournament April 28 against Brazil, then take on China and Kazakhstan to close out group play. The top four finishers from the event will qualify for the FINA World League Super Final in June at Shanghai, China.

Lewis in Long Beach

Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach will compete this weekend at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The three-day event starts Friday and runs through Sunday. Lewis, 24, will compete in his second street circuit of the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season with the EFFORT Racing team.

“It is going to be fun to represent both EFFORT Racing and my local race fans here in Long Beach, which is very close to the town of Laguna Beach, where I was born and raised,” Lewis said in a statement. “We look to improve on our results and keep our Porsche 911 GT3 R up front.”
