Briefs: Women’s Laguna Open Saturday

The 39th annual Women’s Laguna Open beach volleyball tournament is Saturday at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.

Twenty-five of the top teams in women’s beach volleyball will battle in pool play over five courts vying for a prize purse of $1,500. Matches begin at 9 a.m. and run throughout the day. There is no charged admission to watch the tournament.

Team USA wins gold

The USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team, which includes sisters Makenzie and Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach High, won the FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament championship Sunday at Auckland, New Zealand.

In the tournament final, Team USA defeated Australia in a shootout, 12-10. Makenzie Fischer and teammate Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, UCLA) tied for game-high scoring honors with three goals during regulation, and one apiece in the shootout. Aria Fischer scored one goal.

Australia had defeated the U.S. in the gold medal match in last year’s tournament final.

Fischer and teammate Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, USC) were named to the all-tournament team.

In previous tournament action, Team USA defeated Brazil (9-4), Japan (17-0) and China (8-2) before edging Canada, 11-9, in the semifinals.

Lewis takes third

Michael Lewis of Laguna Beach qualified third among 41 drivers for Rounds 6 and 7 of the Pirelli World Challenge April 25 in the No. 41 EFFORT Racing/Curb-Agajanian Porsche 911 GT3 R at Barber Motorsports Park at Birmingham, Ala.

Rounds 8 and 9 of the Pirelli World Challenge is May 15-17 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Ontario, Canada.

Lewis had finished fourth, overall, at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach April 19.
