Briefs: Kessy takes home title

The women’s title at the Atlantic City Open, the fourth stop on the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, was won Sunday by the team of Jennifer Kessy and April Rossat Atlantic City, N.J.

The top-seeded team in the tournament, Kessy, of Laguna Beach, and Ross (Costa Mesa) came from a set down in Sunday’s final to edge the No. 7 team of Emily Day/Summer Ross, 23-25, 21-6,15-13.

Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach), the No. 2 team, reached the semifinals but were denied a spot in the final by Day and Summer Ross who scored a 21-16, 21-15 win. The teams had met a week earlier in the final of the AVP Cincinnati Open which was won by Day and Ross.

Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach) and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) made it two wins in a row on the tour by winning the AVP Atlantic City Open men’s title Sunday. Patterson and Gibb, the No. 2-seeded team in the tournament, swept the top-seeded team of Sean Rosenthal (Los Angeles) and Phil Dalhausser (Ventura), 21-19, 21-15, in the final.

Patterson and Gibb were coming off a win a week earlier at the Cincinnati Open in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The next AVP open tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday at St. Petersburg, Fla.

The final stop of the 2013 AVP Tour will be in Huntington Beach Oct. 18-20.

ASP event is Sunday at Trestles

The 34 surfers on the World Championship Tour circuit, along with wild cards Mitch Crews and Dane Reynolds, will contend Sunday at the 2013 Hurley Pro at San Onofre State Beach-Lower Trestles.

The contest, which runs through Sept. 21, is the only Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Tour event in North America.

Eleven-time Assn. of Surfing Professionals champion Kelly Slater has won the past three Hurley Pro titles. Slater is included among the field of competitors in this year’s event.
